For the past two weeks, I’ve streamed Sturgill Simpson on Freegal. Sturgill who, you ask. Only the most talented non-mainstream artist you’ve never heard of — even though he won a Grammy, and the album I’m listening to “Cuttin’ Grass – Vol. 1 (The Butcher Shoppe Sessions)” was awarded album of the year. Simpson’s latest release “The Ballad of Dood and Juanita” is a concept album that takes place during the Civil War and includes the jingle of horse harness and musket fire along with Sturgill’s brawny vocals.
Acapella Harmonies, recommended by Dennis
I have always loved harmony! One of the best way to hear it is by listening to acapella groups. My music taste is all over the place, but as far as acapella groups go Home Free and Pentatonix are my favorites. Take a listen to Home Free’s newest album. They are a country group and this album is all about coming together in America.

With spooky season finally being here, I’ve love listening to all the Halloween and fall playlists on Freegal. Totally free with my AJPL card, I can listen to playlists like, “Pumpkin Spice Season,” “Autumn Pop” and “Halloween Party Jams.” Just go to Featured Playlists on the Freegal homepage of your app or desktop website to find these collections of spooky songs. With classics like “I Put a Spell on You,” “Monster Mash” and “I Want Candy,” you’re sure to break out your costumes along with your dance moves.

My favorite way to use Freegal is for all those songs you hear when you’re out and about – in restaurants and stores or through other people’s radios. I’ll make a mental note to check Freegal for a song and most of the time it’s there for me to enjoy. Songs I’ve found this way include “Work Hard and Be Nice” by Michael Franti, “Hard Way Home” by Brandi Carlile, and “The Next Storm” by Frank Turner. Like Dennis, I’m also a big fan of Home Free and love that so much of their catalog is in Freegal!

You can create your own playlists in Freegal or try the ones curated with themes ranging from Broadway Favorites, Harry Potter, country, jazz, baseball, piano, seasons, R & B, rock and roll, Grammy award nominees, CMA Award nominees, football, classical or specific groups like Pink Floyd, Dave Brubeck Quartet or entertainers like Prince. No commercials, no repetition unless you decide. Currently, I am listening to “Gone Fishin’” by Sanibel Public Library, 45 songs and 2 hours, 45 minutes and 48 seconds of free music!

My favorite song that I’ve downloaded from Freegal and listen to daily is “Ooh Child” by the Five Stair Steps. I love this song. It puts me in the right frame of mind for starting my day.
